Moloka'i Bay Master Plan

Residential Resort

The resort development, comprising one hundred seventy units, has been meticulously designed to integrate with its natural surroundings while optimizing the experience of its users. The units are strategically clustered to capitalize on the site’s inherent visual assets, offering panoramic views of either the ocean, the golf course, or the serene internal lagoon. This thoughtful arrangement not only maximizes aesthetic appeal but also fosters a sense of harmony between the built environment and the landscape.

Complementing the residential component is a carefully curated mix of retail and recreational facilities designed to cater to the diverse needs of both short-term visitors and long-term residents. These amenities serve as communal anchors, promoting social interaction and enhancing the overall functionality of the development.

Overall, the development exemplifies a holistic approach to coastal architecture, balancing aesthetic, functional, and environmental considerations to create a resilient and vibrant community.

The architectural character reflects the scale and detailing of traditional Hawaiian buildings – including light wood frames and corrugated roofing.

The architectural response to the site’s climatic conditions demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of environmental sustainability. The design incorporates expansive lanais, providing shaded outdoor living spaces that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior environments. Additionally, the layout prioritizes cross-ventilation within individual units and beneath the raised structures. This approach harnesses natural airflow to mitigate the heat and to moderate the impact of the prevailing trade winds, which originate seasonally from the east. By elevating the buildings, the design also ensures minimal disruption to the natural terrain and allows for a more dynamic interaction between the built and natural ecosystems. At least one YSA principal participated as, design architect, supervising architect, and/or designer while associated with the architect-of-record for this project.
